Teach sciences in universities
LUWEERO — Kisamba Mugerwa, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, has urged private institutions of higher learning to embark on the teaching of science, to decrease unemployment in the country.
He was addressing a stakeholder meeting aimed at laying strategies on how to run the university at Bugema University, recently. The minister said only 13% of the students in higher institutions of learning study science compared to art students.
Parents urged to support UPE
KYAMBOGO — Parents have been urged to provide essential school needs on top of what the government provides for their children as a way of supporting Universal Primary Education.
Ronald Balimwezo, Kyambogo LC5 councillor, made the call, while launching a fish farming project to generate fees for orphans who fail to join secondary school at Kyambogo University Campus recently. He said UPE is a responsibility of both the government and parents.
Create days for career guidance
KAMPALA — The Ministry of education and sports has directed district education officers to establish special days for guidance and counselling of children in primary school.
In a letter addressed to all district and municipal education officers, Francis Xavier Lubanga, the permanent secretary said, “the objective of the days is to impart career education and will mainly focus on self- awareness that helps children to know about themselves, their interests, abilities, values and attitudes.â€
British council sends 24 to UK
KAMPALA — This year, the British Council will be sending over 24 students to various universities in the United Kingdom. Sarah Lubulwa, the education services officer scholarships and links, at the British Council said this during a pre-departure briefing for British sponsored Ugandan Scholars recently at Rwenzori Courts in Kampala.
She said most of them are beneficiaries of the Chevening, Kulika, Commonwealth, Rhodes and Hornby Trust scholarships.
