KENYA stole the show, winning two of three opening bouts on day one of the King’s Cup yesterday.

Uganda’s B boxing side started on a false note, losing their first two fights before bouncing back in their last two at Lugogo.

Uganda’s juniors picked two wins from four quarterfinal bouts after Philip Adyak and Mudde Ntambi were edged out by Ethiopian Endakachew Kebede and Rwanda’s Michael Gashumba 3-2 respectively.

Experienced Kebede, an Olympian, had to dig deep into his book of tricks to overcome the Ugandan, who countered him with body shots. Solomon Bogere (Uganda B) survived after stopping James Menya (Kenya) who got an injury in round three.

The victory assured the hosts of a second point after middleweight Badru Nyombi overshadowed former Ugandan boxer Geoffrey Kitooke (Rwanda) 4-1.

The Kenyan Hit Squad looked in fine form, and are set to battle the Ugandan senior side, the Bombers, Wednesday after today’s rest day.

The week-long tournament has drawn 46 boxers from five teams including the senior sides of Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Kenya. The other Rwandan club Jacobs was barred after Rwanda BA boss Gastugi denied the Kigali side.

Results:
Light flyweight- Kebede (Ethiopia) bt Adyak (Uganda B) 3-2, Gashumba (Rwanda) bt Ntambi (Uganda B) 3-2.

Bantamweight- Munyasia (Kenya) bt Gurmessa (Ethiopia) 5-0,

Featherweight- Kasina (Kenya) bt Habishuti (Rwanda) 4-1.

Lightweight- Bogere (Uganda B) stopped Menya (Kenya RSCI 3),

Middleweight- Nyombi (Uganda B) bt Kitooke (Rwanda) 4-1.
