THE match-fixing allegations that have hit Ugandan soccer took another twist yesterday with the mysterious death of a witness Peter Agong of Akol FC, hours before he met a probe team. Agong died as soon as he arrived Kampala.
The hastily-organised probe committee has Chris Kalibbala, Justus Mugisha, Anthony Kimuli, Sande Manara, Abdu Kyambadde, Yusuf Kyeyune ‘Chuni’, Luyimbazi Mugalu, James Okodi, Winnie Bukenya, Valentino Oleicho, Jackson Byamugabe and Paul Waisswa.
“It is real circus. Kalibbala has been linked to match-fixing and Luyimbazi Mugalu is the secretary of Villa, one of the clubs that is being investigated. How will we get a true report from them?†said Express’ secretary Kavuma Kabenge.
Disgruntled soccer fans and officials have petitioned Uganda’s vice president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya to intervene and appoint an independent commission of inquiry to save the game.
KCC chairman Kabuye Takuba has signed the document while Express supremo Godfrey Kirumira and SC Villa strongman Andrew Zzimwe Kassagga are other club officials expected to endorse the petition drafted by Kasozi, Omongole and Co. Advocates.
According to the petition, the fans called for the suspension of the league.
Police 0 SC Villa 2
Express 1 URA 0
Fresh from a bizzare 22-1 victory over Akol, SC Villa could only manage two goals against Police yesterday at Mandela Stadium.
Edgar Watson and Kenyan striker Vincent Tendwa scored the goals.
At Wankulukuku, the refereeing circus that has characterised Express’ wins continued yesterday, with Charles Nsereko red carding two URA players—Abdu Ssenyondo for attacking him, and Deo Sserwada for dissent— before gifting the hosts a last-minute penalty.
Express actually got two penalties but the first was missed by Hassan Mubiru, while Bana Zidane converted the second.
Villa play Kinyara while Express face Top TV in final games on Thursday.
