Sir — The press has quoted Nkoyooyo as saying the late dictator Idi Amin “liked his religion and respected other religious leaders.” I find this amazing.

First, because Nkoyooyo being the head of the church of Uganda, one would expect him to remember better than any other Ugandan that his predecessor, the late Archbishop Janan Luwum, was murdered by Amin’s death squads, with full knowledge of Amin himself. What does Nkoyooyo mean when he says Amin respected religious leaders?

By butchering religious leaders like Luwum together with hundreds of thousands of other Ugandans, does Nkoyooyo suggest that the over 500,000 Ugandans who were butchered by Amin’s reign of terror were sub-souls that did not deserve to live? Were these people not religious at all? So Amin, in Nkoyooyo’s eyes respected religious leaders and loved all religions by executing the leaders of those religious! I think Nkoyooyo must apologise to Ugandans.
