Fifty health workers have fled Lwala Hospital following the withdrawal of the Arrow Group which had been guarding the hospital.

The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Allan Mpairwe, told The New Vision in Soroti on Saturday that 30 of the 80 medical staff were remaining. among them is a doctor who operates from the neighbouring Kaberamaido district.

He said the Arrow Group was withdrawn from the hospital last week to track down the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels who attacked Kalaki in Kaberamaido district.

Lwala hospital is near Lwala Girls Secondary School where the rebels recently abducted about 80 schoolgirls

Mpairwe said he will operate from Soroti town until the security at the hospital is restored.

He said the absence of soldiers to guard the hospital had scared the staff from working at night since the rebels could come posing as patients.

He said unless steps are taken to guarantee security, the hospital will soon have no medical staff.

The LRA, lead by Joseph Kony (above), have been raiding villages in northern Uganda for 17 years.
