LUBAGA South MP Ken Lukyamuzi has sent a petition to the Speaker of Parliament challenging the current electricity power tariffs with over 1,300 signatures from the public appended to it, reports Milton Olupot.

Lukyamuzi told a press conference yesterday, that he will present the petition to the House on Monday.
Lukyamuzi, in his petition, also attacked the Electricity Regulatory Authority calling it a quack institution.

The ingredients of the petition are that the tariff figures used to charge for electricity power lack credibility because they are not scientifically quantified. It says VAT calculation on electricity power is based on wrong figures.

Lukyamuzi is also petitioning the House to reprimand the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Syda Bbumba, for allegedly defying Parliament six months after the new tariff was fixed.

He accused Bbumba of failure to brief Parliament on the role of the concessionaires in UEB. He said Generation of power had been ‘given away’ without briefing Parliament. “This is a breach of contract, this could even lead to a censure,” he said.

The petition requires that Parliament constitutes an inquiry over the matter and reports back to the House in 45 days. He said the current power rates defeat the government’s plan of enabling all Ugandans to enjoy the use of electricity power.

In his petition, Lukyamuzi emphasises that urban dwellers in the country were finding it difficult to pay their electricity bills because of the high cost. He said this would be worse with the rural dwellers.

He said rural electrification may not be easily implemented because of the poor housing in rural areas.
