Medics Get Pay Raise

SALARIES for public service medical workers have been increased in the new financial year, reports Okello Jabweli.

Documents seen by The New Vision indicate that salaries of all medical workers except the lowest cadre U7 have been increased.

The figures show that a principle medical officer U2 scale now earns a gross monthly salary of between sh904,750 to sh 940,495 per month.

The old salary ranged from sh817,440 to sh839,780.

Medical officers (special grade) U3, formerly earning between sh623,030 to sh652,070 have been upgraded to the U2 scale.

Scale differentiation for accountants (U5a-3), clinical officers (U6-U5c) and assistant agricultural officers (U6-U5c) have been scrapped and the entry point salaries increased.

The increments stem from a Job Evaluation Study which indicated that public service workers earn 40% less than their colleagues in the private sector.

Sources in the Ministry of Public Service on Wednesday said salaries for public service workers were increases to at least 75% of private sector salaries in 10 years time.
Medical workers have been given top priority.

The upper limit for U7 scale however remains at between sh210,632 and sh221,753 for new entrants.

According to the new Single Spine Salary Structure being implemented by the Government, U7 covers enrolled nurses, UPDF privates, police constables and primary school teachers.

Health workers are protesting the new pay structure that lumps enrolled nurses with army privates, primary school teachers and police constables.

The Medical Workers Union last week called for pay increases for low cadre health workers, saying they bear grave risks while discharging their duties.

The pay increments for medical workers are, however still, on hold pending last week’s request by the Medical Workers Union that implementation of the new salary ranges for medical workers be frozen until the terms of U7 low cadres are revised upwards.
