THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is to tax institutions of worship despite protests by several clergy on the decision.

The Assistant Commissioner for tax education, Christopher Kaweesa, said they will tax the surplus income religious institutions have not put to the common use of their congregations or for the good of society.

Kaweesa said where URA establishes that surplus income is for a private benefit of one or a few recipients such income will be subjected to tax.

“URA must be satisfied that a church or any other such institution conforms to its primary objective if its activities are to be exempted from tax,’’ Kaweesa said
“We will not tax the offertory or tithes, we have never done so,” he said.
