The Uganda National Farmers Association (UNFA) has said President Yoweri Museveni (right) was ill-advised to give a go-ahead for the introduction of Genetically Modified (GMOs).

The New Vision reported on August 27 that the President had okayed the introduction of the controversial organisms.

Museveni was quoted as saying that he was “now fully mobilised to accept biotechnology.”

“The President was not rightly advised to give an automatic go-ahead to GMOs,” UNFA spokesman Kikonyogo Ngatya, said yesterday.

The president of UNFA, Chebet Maikut, who could not be contacted because he was reportedly up-country, was reported in the media last week as bitterly opposed to the new development.

Ngatya said UNFA’s major concern was safety and minimising risk. “Are our farmers safe?”he asked. He said the official position of UNFA was that the Government should first put in place a legal framework through Parliament.
