GAETANO Kaggwa, the former Ugandan Big Brother Africa (BBA) housemate, returned home yesterday to an unprecedented welcome, comparable to world class pop superstars, at the Entebbe International Airport, reports Geoffrey Kamali.

Gaetano returned aboard South African Airways in the company of his BBA lover Abby Plaatjes and show host Mark Pilgrim, exciting his waiting fans.

Their plane touched down at 1:37pm, causing a sudden rush within the airport building as thousands of flag-waving fans screamed with joy.

The fans, some wearing Gaetano T-shirts, had gathered at the Voyager Restaurant on the second floor as well as the the lower ones to have a glimpse of the two love birds whose sex romps on television excited millions across the continent.

Security personnel, including the Presidential Guard Brigade, military and the ordinary Police appeared to have been overwhelmed by the surging crowds.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) workers and employees of Entebbe Handling Services (ENHAS) abandoned their offices to see the stars. They surrounded the plane as the stars walked out, Gaetano coming out first.

“Gaetano amalako! Gaetano amalako!” the crowd chanted (Gaetano will soldier on). The crowd waved MTN flags with inscriptions, Gae waffe (Our Gae).

An overwhelmed Gaetano suddenly emerged from the VIP lounge, avoiding an army of journalists and fans that had waited for him at the arrival lounge at the lower floor.

He was then mobbed by another crowd and the fans almost tore his black shirt, prompting security to whisk him off to a waiting black Mercedes Benz, UAA 099X.

“Banange,” he screamed as the car sped off. He did not even have the opportunity to drive the Mercedes Benz convertible that had been prepared for him.

His father, Kiyimba-Kaggwa and his mother, Evelyn, could hardly greet him. One of the bodyguards from Security Group even pushed Kiyimba off, mistaking him for one of the fans.

After Gaetano’s departure, the crowd then descended on Abby, groping her as Pilgrim and security officials restrained the fans.

One of them shouted, “Gae is a king here!” to which Abby, in a white outfit and a visible yellow G-string, shouted back: “Give me a break, please. You don’t have to touch me!”
Abby and Pilgrim were later also whisked off into a waiting white limousine, which sped off towards Kampala, trailed by a convoy of fans’ vehicles.

The journey to Kampala took motorists over five hours as taxi drivers took over the highway. Police patrol cars had to intervene to clear the way for oncoming vehicles.
Earlier, the crowd temporarily blocked Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s convoy as he drove to the airport. Mutebi was travelling to Swaziland on a visit.

There were also security fears that visiting Burundian President, Domitien Ndayizeye, would be inconvenienced as he returned later in the afternoon.

Gaetano told a press conference at the Sheraton Hotel late last evening that he was not sure if he would resume his law degree course at Makerere immediately, report Denis Jjuuko and Steven Candia.

He said MNet and MultiChoice Uganda, the organisers of Big Brother Africa, were in charge of his future.

Meanwhile, several people were injured, some of them seriously, in numerous accidents in Entebbe.

Entebbe district Police chief Christine Alalo yesterday said, “There was a lot of excitement but the town was peaceful, though there were two accidents of which one was serious.”
