GERMAN technical director Guenter Zittel (right) will spearhead a five-year-old sports investment sensitisation plan slated to start next year.

Zittel, holder of one of the highest coaching badges from the DFB, came under a cultural exchange programme, courtesy of the German technical co-operation (GTZ).

He has been critical of the inadequate finances injected into the National Council of Sports but has accepted the sports ministry’s offer that will see him contracted for another three years.

Sports state minister Henry Okello Oryem justified the move when he asked the German Technical Union to renew the German’s three-year contract, expiring next year.

“I was told by the minister to have my contract renewed. I have only done 50% of what I was supposed to do because of the limited finances in the council but with this policy the future looks brighter now and I would love to stay and see things changing over the years,” he said.

“The policy will create a sporting culture here that has been absent before and its success will depend on the administrators that will be put in place to monitor proceedings,” he added.

Among the original plans of the CAF-UEFA meridian projects, was for Zittel to build Uganda’s coaching capacity.

The German has also been critical of the poor management of Ugandan soccer by Denis Obua’s FUFA.

The sh250b tentatively budgeted sports policy is still pending Cabinet approval.
