MTN Uganda on Wednesday opened its business solutions centre at the Lower Tower of the refurbished Crested Towers Building in Kampala. The centre will cater for the delivery of fixed line services.
MTN country director Charles Mbire said the centre was part of the fibre optic’s $20m investment. Mbire said MTN had done extremely well, since entering the Ugandan market in October 1998.
“Even with what other people would call cut-throat competition, we have managed to remain at the top of our competitors. We connect more than 10,000 customers every month against about 5,000 for our competitors,†said Mbire.
The communications state minster Michael Werikhe officiated at the function attended by various government officials, corporate clients and stakeholders.
Werikhe said he has been monitoring MTN’s progress with keen interest since the giant telecommunications company joined the Ugandan mobile telephone operations in October 1998.
“By being the first in Africa to deliver a fibre optic network to the customers’ doors, this supports our intention of being part of the information age,†Werikhe said.
He urged MTN to expand the project throughout the country. MTN boasts of the largest subscriber base that stood at 350,000 by end of last year.
