Moroto district has appealed to the British government to fund the installation of 18 windmills that will provide water to livestock..

The LC5 chairman, Terence Achia, and the chief administrative officer, Luke Lokuda, in a statement said the district required 2,555 billion litres of water for the estimated 250,000 head of cattle and 400,000 goats and sheep.

The initial set of windmills are to be installed in nine sub-counties.
Lokuda said they would be located near primary schools.

“Goats need two million litres of water per day while we need 1.825 billion litres of water for one year to take care of 250,000 head of cattle at a consumption rate of 20 litres of water per cow each day,” the statement said in part.

The four-page statement was presented to the deputy British High Commissioner to Uganda, Jon Elliot, who visited the district on Tuesday.

Lokuda said the water provided would also be used for small-scale irrigation.

The district also appealed for the rehabilitation of a gravity water flow scheme whose pipeline had been vandalized by the locals.

Lokuda said the water scheme had 14 stand taps that served two seminaries and nearby villages .

He said the estimated cost of repairs was sh35 million, which the district could not raise.
