‘Armes en Art’ (Arms into arts), with ‘Fiel dos Santos’ (Metal sculptures from Mozambique) is now open at AfriArt Gallery, UMA show grounds until Sept 30. ‘The ‘Armies en Art.’ project began in the mid ‘90s when the Christian Council of Mozambique thought of how to get rid of thousands of weapons collected from rebels and former soldiers of the 16-year-long war that ravaged the country until 1992. Nucleo de Arte, an artist studio of which Fiel dos Santos is a member, offered a solution: why not transform the tools of doom into something more positive but yet a reminder of their brutal history, and something showing the world the process from destruction to creation.

Through Fiel dos Santos the deadly AK47 of Mozambique have now become sculptures of dancers, musicians and other optimism - carrying characters. At AfriArt Gallery.
