It’s as well Museveni has said ‘no’!

SIR— I read in The New Vision of last Friday that President Yoweri Museveni had rejected the MPs proposal for a pension scheme. Well, I am glad he has. Some of these MPs think that Ugandans are fools.

Nobody is refusing the MPs from putting part of their salary or gratuity into a trust fund. What we are saying is that the MPs should not expect any contribution (in terms of percentages) from the Government as a top-up. Even if it is 1% that is a lot of money compared to our basket and the need to reduce spending funds.

If the MPs are really nationalistic, let them fight for the pensions of the retired civil servants which have not been catered for because of lack of funds in the Treasury.

However, all said and done, I wish to say that as human beings like any of us, MPs definitely deserve an increase, but this should only be after others in service have had their share. Comparing Uganda to the developed countries which pay pension for MPs is like comparing the Premier League or the Bundesliga with our own despicable Nile Special Super League.
