MPs on the works committee are bitter with the Government’s refusal to demolish several commercial buildings in Mengo trading centre to create space for a wider road for fear of compensating the property owners.

The MPs yesterday said the $3m grant for Wakaliga-Nateete road project would turn out to be a shame if the standard road width at the Mengo trading centre is compromised.

“What is the purpose of having a bad road because the Government fears to compensate the owners of these buildings. What is their value? Is it worth having a narrow section at Mengo?’’ Gagawala Wambuzi (Bugabula) asked.

They visited the road project on Tuesday and suggested that works, transport and communications minister John Nasasira (above) tours the project to appreciate their argument.

“The road is passing on verandas of supermarkets at Mengo. How are people expected to park their cars and shop?’’ Nathan Byanyima asked.
