FIVE multi-national companies have tendered for the construction of the Kampala-Northern by-pass.

The companies include Reeder Dywidad of Germany which quoted a bid price of sh123, 325, 098.14.

In a joint venture bid, Basil Read (Pty) Ltd of South Africa and Bouygue s Construction of France both put in a bid of sh132, 303, 795.57.

An Italian company Salin Construttori pledged to do the job at sh98, 168, 223, 220.

In another joint venture between German company STRABAG International and REYNOLDS Construction Company Ltd, the firms put in a bid to construct the by-pass at sh152, 172, 895, 602.

While, a Danish firm NCC International Denmark AS, quoted a bid price of sh116, 899, 690, 826.

All the bid prices are inclusive of 17% VAT.

Francis Magambe Byaruhanga, the finance and administration division manager at the Road Agency Formation Unit officiated at the bid opening held yesterday at Communications House, Kampala.

The 21-kilometre Kampala-Northern by-pass which is to be financed by the European Union, is expected to help reduce on city traffic jams.

Byaruhanga said the project, which starts from Bweyogerere and stretches up to Busega on Masaka Road, is expected to start in January next year.

He said the evaluation of the bids, would take about two months before the contract winner is announced.

He said under the contract terms, the successful bidder is to do the job in 30 months.
