Ugandans eyeing big cash in Portugal

UGANDANS have a chance to win lucrative cash prizes in today’s IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal.
All that Uganda’s team of Martin Toroitich, Wilson Kipkimei, Francis Yiga, Alex Malinga and Jafred Lorone have to do is have a runner in the top six finishers.
The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) will offer $30,000 (about sh 60m) to the winner of the 21 kilometer race.
The second finisher will be entitled to $15,000, third- $10,000, fourth- $7000, fifth- $5,000, sixth-$3000.
There are also team prizes. The winner in this category will be entitled to $15,000, second- $12,000, third-$9,000, fourth-$7,500, fifth- $6,000 and sixth- $3,000.
Atlanta Olympics 400m bronze medallist Davis Kamoga is the only Ugandan to have won a cash prize in an IAAF event. Kamoga scooped $40,000 for winning silver at the Athens World Championship in 1997.
The IAAF council in a bid to boost competitiveness at the annual race introduced the cash awards. The current figures are for the 2001 period. Cash prizes are also offered at the IAAF World track and field championships and IAAF cross-country.
