NEW VISION IN EDUCATION

By Joan Mugenzi

THE new column that aims at helping students pass Geography has been warmly received by teachers and students.

“I got many calls and SMS messages congratulating us on the new venture,” says Emmanuel Ngerageze the columnist of ‘Geog your memory’, which started featuring last week.

The column’s major target group is those who have been finding difficulties answering questions in Geography Paper 3 for lack of appropriate examples.

The paper is about Uganda, but there are no current materials for students to do their research. Newspapers remain the only current textbooks in the absence of educational materials.

Ngerageze sets questions based on newspaper articles that run in the New Vision throughout the week and students are expected to work hand-in-hand with their teachers to ensure that they answer the questions.

He advises that students who have not been getting copies of the New Vision should insist that they get them.

“The questions are not only for the candidate classes. Other classes should also embrace the assignments so that the students can be helped through guided research. Students cannot do research on their own, but once guided, they learn a great deal.

Getting examples while answering questions in their final examinations will not be a very difficult task since they would have read several articles about Uganda,” says Ngerageze.

For students in day schools, Ngerageze advises parents to support their children “by ensuring that their children do the assignments in the newspapers.

Students, parents and teachers should endeavour to buy and keep the Monday copy of The New Vision to get the questions and also know which copies of news-paper they will need to research from during the week.

With a man of 17 years experience in teaching Geography, what excuse can one have for failing to catch up with the subject.

All students and teachers need to do, is to take Ngerageze’s tasks seriously.
