Communication minister John Nasasira yesterday sent out a condolence message to the families of the victims of the Jinja dam bridge accident on Sunday.

He also repeated his appeal to the public to observe speed regulations on the bridge “in order to minimise such accidents.” He said four people had been confirmed dead and several others injured.

He said they had not yet established the number of victims who could have drowned after their vehicles plunged into the river but said it could be about 30.

“I have learnt with profound shock of the tragic accident that occurred at the Nalubaale (former Owen Falls) dam on the River Nile at around 11:30am. The accident is suspected to have involved eight vehicles, three of which are believed to have sunk into the river,” Nasasira said.

“On behalf of my ministry and on my own behalf, I wish to convey my condolences to the bereaved families and also express our deep sympathy to the injured and those who lost their property in this tragic accident,” he added.

The multiple accident occurred when a Kenya-bound Mercedes Benz trailer UAE 765T/907UBR, which apparently suffered a brake failure, collided with a minibus.

He said the Government was doing everything possible to retrieve the victims and the vehicles from the river and thanked the Police and the public for the quick response to the accident.

He regretted the inconveniences, especially the disruption of traffic.
