UGANDA lost to Papua New Guinea by 53 runs in the final tie of the International Cricket Council (ICC) regional U-19 World Cup qualifiers here yesterday.

Both teams however had earlier qualified as Africa and East Asia Pacific region representatives at the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh next year.

Put in to field, Uganda bowlers limited the Guineans to 54/4 in the first 20 overs with paceman Patrick Ochan (3/39) sparkling.

A 44 run partnership for the eighth wicket stand slowly anchored PNG to 193/9 with a half-century from man-of-match Chris Amini (52).

The Ugandans never got into the game from the start of their chase when they lost openers Michael Kintu and Jimmy Okello for ducks in the first two overs.

Fred Isabirye (56) brought back some life before cheaply giving away his wicket for a catch with the score at 124/7 in 21 overs.

The last four wickets struggled in vein to lose the tie with 20 overs at hand.

“We had the chance to play better but we just never got into the game and we cheaply lost it,” said captain Clive Kyangungu.
