Wandegeya is the sort of area; where as far as culinary affairs go, take aways are the rule than the exception. With Makerere University being just a stone’s throw away, these fast food joints do a roaring business with the bulk of their customers being students from the Uni and other tertiary institutions around the area.

Interestingly, the side opposite College Inn is said to be the most attractive in terms of clientele, and this fact is borne out by the sheer number of pedestrians who traverse the street compared to the other side. In any case, Teachers Grill is hardly in the fast food league and hence the factor of side does not really apply.

Being in a basement where ventilation and natural lighting is at a premium, Teachers Grill is somewhat dark when it comes to atmosphere, of course there are numerous eating joints that are located in basements and are a lot more airy and well lit.

It all boils down to choice. Here one gets the impression that the powers that be deliberately chose to keep the surroundings, for want of a better word, romantic and alluring. I do admit that this does have its merits and devotees, as one will espy a couple here and there getting into a cosy tête-à-tête.

I would be remiss not to speak of the veranda that abuts the main dinning room area and certainly offers a nice al fresco setting away from the basement. By the way, this is probably the only proper restaurant in the area where one can sit down and have a decent meal in a worthwhile atmosphere.

Pork in Wandegeya is one of those somewhat controversial issues for more reasons than one. I am told that the late Hajji Kasule family once owned a large chunk of real estate in and around Wandegeya that was limited to the side opposite College Inn.

As good practicing Muslims, it is only reasonable and sensible to expect whoever leased their property not to serve pork. This is a tacit rule that is commonly observed among themselves and non-Muslims. Conversely and ironically, the other side of the street has become a bastion for pork vendors and bully for Teachers Grill they feature such classical dishes as pork chop Hawaii as well as recipes featuring pork.

I was quite satisfied with the pork chop Hawaii, while fellow trencherman found the fillet steak as tender as expected though it was not cooked medium rare as requested. I made do with the chateau potatoes that I find are always a gem of a way to cook potatoes.

They also have a daily special that is priced around the sh5,000 mark.

On the whole I was impressed with the overall cleanliness of the place especially the loos. The service is more than average while the food is not bad.
