DORCUS Inzikuru beat newly crowned world champion Tirunesh Dibaba to snatch a silver medal in the 5000-metre race at the 8th All Africa Games on Saturday.
The athlete from Arua broke the Kenyan and Ethiopian hold on the long distance races.
After running just behind the leaders for 12 laps in drenching rain, Inzikuru stopped the cat and mouse game involving her, three Ethiopians and two Kenyans at the Abuja national stadium by breaking clear of the field with 300 metres to go.
She was chased all the way, before she was out-sprinted on the home stretch by Ethiopian Defar Meseret who took gold clocking 16:42.00.
Former world junior champion Inzikuru, 21, picked up only her second medal in the senior category, in 16:42.90 with bronze going to Kenyan Isabela Ochichi.
“I disorganised the Kenyans and Ethiopians by sprinting off first. I am happy that I have kept my promise to return home with a medal,†she said.
