MPs Nobert Mao (Gulu municipality), Reagan Okumu (Aswa) and Kasiano Wadri (Terego) were among over 300 students who graduated at Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi’s 8th graduation ceremony.
The chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Paul Bakyenga, presided over the Saturday ceremony for the first time as Chancellor of the 10-year-old institution.
The three MPs, Uganda Young Democrats president, Leander Komakech and Jude Mbabali, the DP spokesperson, received the Associated Bachelor of Arts degree in democracy and development studies with 39 other students.
Other disciplines included bachelors in Business administration (78), ethics and development (45), building and design technology (14), science (12) and Associate Bachelor of science (3). Ninety-nine received diplomas in education management, human resources management, health services management, computer science and democracy and development studies.
Fifty-seven students were also awarded Masters degrees in development studies (36), health management (11) and business administration (10). Two honorary doctorates, in Science and one in Letters were awarded to Prof. Firmin Mees of the University of Ghent (Belgium) and Fr. Hillary Tibanyenda.
The head of the European delegation, Sigurd Illing, who was the chief guest, commended the Episcopal Conference for establishing the university and promised continued support.
The EU sponsors courses including democracy and development studies.
“We are happy to be associated with this university and are committed to helping Uganda build a strong civil society,†Illing said, adding, “there is a need for economic growth but first there is a need for education to build the intellectual capacity.â€
