The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is to engage the services of the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU) to arrest people who vandalise electricity installations on the Bombo power line.

In a fortnight, at least 4,000 metres of electric conductors on the power line were stolen. This subjected the line users to frequent power failures.

UEDCL spokesman Edward Twine said the company’s installations on the line were vandalised four times in two weeks.

“We’re investigating. We were told that there is a commercial motive, but we can’t rule out the possibility of power interruptions at the UPDF headquarters in Bombo,” he said.

Twine said the theft was to be coordinated.

“We are liaising with local authorities to establish the cause.

We appeal to the public to be vigilant and protect electricity installations as their own and report any suspicious characters.”

Twine said the VCCU had broken a racket of thieves who siphon out transformer oil, rendering the machines useless.
