MANY of the diseases that afflict Ugandans could be prevented if people tapped rain water, a Makerere University lecturer has said.

Dr Moses Musaazi, a lecturer in the Faculty of Technology said whereas simple technologies are available for harvesting rainwater, a large number of Kampala residents use water from contaminated springs. He said most water springs in Kampala are contaminated. As a result, diseases caused by drinking contaminated water are rampant.

“Rainwater is very safe and people should start harvesting it to avoid these health complications. Most of the wells in Kampala are contaminated and the water is not good for human consumption,” he said.

Musaazi added that harvesting rainwater should not only be associated with the poor but the rich too. It is something that cuts across all classes of people. “If you don’t need water at least harvest it and give it to the poor,” he said.

He urged urban authorities to formulate by-laws demanding residents to harvest rain water.
