AT least three rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) have been killed and several others injured when the Uganda People’s Defence Forces ambushed them, reports Justin Moro.
The about 20 rebels had tried to raid Acholibur trading centre in Aruu county in Pader district last week.
The UPDF also rescued eight captives who had been abducted by the LRA the previous night, security sources said.
One of the rescued said the rebels had planned to loot food and merchandise from the centre.
He said the LRA were facing an acute food shortage.
He said a rebel commander called Olum was one of the three killed by the UPDF in the battle at about 11.00 p.m.
UPDF 5th Division spokesman Chris Magezi said the rebel attack was foiled.
In a related incidence, the UPDF killed a rebel and recovered one gun as they repulsed a group of LRA rebels who tried to ambush a vehicle on Kitgum-Lokung Road on Wednesday afternoon, security sources in Kitgum said. They did not give details of the casualties.
