TWO suspected burglars were gunned down by the Police in a five-hour operation yesterday.
The first thug, whose identity Police had not established, was gunned down at about 8:30am while hiding in the ceiling of A H Thakkar, an accounting firm on R Almeida and Sons building on Kampala Road.
The second, identified as Paul Waswa, was shot dead two and a half-hours later while resisting arrest after the Police pulled him out of a water tank.
Police suspect the two were part of a bigger group that entered the building through the roof. They ripped open the ceiling to A H Thakkar before breaking into Norvik Enterprise Ltd, a pharmaceutical store where they stole an unspecified amount of money.
Kampala CID chief Moses Sakira said Wasswa was a resident of Namungoona, Rubaga division and a member of the Uganda Kick Boxing Association.
The joint operation by the Police, the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU) and Tight Security guards started at about 7:00am when the guards alerted the Police about the thugs holed up in the building.
Police immediately ringed off the scene and used sniffer dogs to bolster the hunt.
The operation disrupted traffic and work on the Kampala-Bombo road for a greater part of the morning.
This is the second break-in into the building in less than two months. Five weeks ago, unidentified thugs broke into the building and stole sh300,000 from A H Thakkar and a $29,000 digital camera from a modeling agency.
