Dr. TERRY Kahuma (right), the executive director of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has asked the Government to step up financial support for the agency.

“If the Government wants to strengthen its policy on quality export trade then the UNBS should be included in its budgetary support because it plays a strategic role in export ensuring standard food quality for the international market,” he said.

He said the losses in quantity and cash due to food rejected foreign markets is enormous.

He was speaking during a workshop on food control system organised by United Nations Industrial Developmental Organisation and Food and Agriculture Organisation at Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala.

Health minister, Jim Muhwezi, was disappointed at the weak laws governing food safety.

“The food safety system in Uganda is still hampered by the outdated legislation and lack of resources required for building a sound food control infrastructure,” he said in a speech read for him by his permanent secretary Mohammed Kezaala. The workshop ends today.
