What happens all over the world is finally coming to our very own capital Kampala. It is the Uganda Fashion Week. The glamour and glitz that have become synonymous with such shows will all be recorded during the inaugural display of creativity. The organiser, Santa Anzo of Arapapa Consultancy, says creativity will be at its best.

This is the week when you have the chance to consult a designer on what suits your body and again their advice on the function that you want to attend. This is the week to exploit in order to make fashion statements in future. This is the best opportunity to shine on Christmas. And by the way, after this fashion week, there should not be any reason why you should appear in the fashion police pages.

This is the show that will elevate you from the wrong fashion side to the right one. African designs are en vogue even across Europe. In matters of style, they stand out and turn heads.

To spice up this show, the queen of couture, Senegalese Oumou Sy, will grace the inaugural Uganda Fashion Week that kicks off on November 20 at the grand Garden City Shopping Complex. Sy creates splendid visual encapsulation, which is a celebration of the African Renaissance.

She uses basically variety to achieve her style. For instance, baskets become sleeves and calabashes are woven into pronounced hairstyles. She also uses lithe models to pleasingly parade her outfits. Her experience spans over two decades. She has exhibited in Europe and she is the brain behind the Dakar International Fashion Week. Sy will be the guest designer.

The revelation was made by Anzo whose company is organising the first ever Uganda Fashion Week.

During the week, there will be two fashion displays everyday showcasing the signature creations of the designers. Models will do the catwalk. The children will not be left out as child models will display children wear on November 22. Outstanding designers will be honoured with awards in categories of gold, silver and bronze.

This multi-cultural week, which is going to be an annual event, is intended at linking designers to potential customers. “The prices will be cut down during the week,” promises Anzo. “We want to create a larger job market for individuals whose line of profession falls within the fashion industry,” she adds.

Anzo also unveiled the official sponsors of the fashion week that include Alliance Francaise, WBS TV, Garden City, and Uganda Breweries under their brand V&A, a fashionable drink. Entrance fee for the daily shows will vary from sh5,000 to sh10,000 depending on the time of the fashion display, while the fee for the children show is at sh3000. Thirty local and eight international designers have already confirmed their participation. The fashion week will be held on the ground floor of Garden City.
