By Arthur Baguma STUDENTS shunned a first year colleague at Makerere University when he reported for the second semester with a wooden suitcase. The Congolese student popularly known as Simba said he had many problems and that was why he couldn’t afford a better suitcase. But he also said that was not big problem in the DRC. Simba first had trouble with a special hire driver at the bus park. “Before I take you, I have to know what you are keeping in that wooden box. Are you a witch?†driver asked. “That is my suit case and I am going to Makerere University,†Simba replied confidently. The driver drove him to a hostel on Sir Apollo Kaggwa road. When he disembarked carrying a wooden suitcase, all residents gathered to gape at the box. However, Simba was not bothered. He told his colleagues that in the DRC, having a wooden box is a luxury. “What is the hullabaloo all about. I have a wooden box, but I use it to keep my personal belongings and besides wood is the best to keep clothes in,†he told his friends. There are few students at Makerere who can be as down to earth as Simba. Ends
