On the cool, crisp, Halloween night last Friday at The Venue above the classy Garden City Shopping and Leisure Centre, Kampala’s infamous meet and greet. The night club was filled with ghostly beat treats for one’s tummy, thirst and listening pleasure.

The atmosphere started off as slow as a cockroach roaming through a New York housing project, but later picked up more speed than a boda boda during rush hour on Kampala Road. The party crowd was treated to a Halloween costume contest hosted by radio Two’s Dennis the Menace.

He persuaded the crowd to either “Yahoo” or nugu, or rather yea or nay, for the spooky-looking, but brave, contestants. They were facing a tough crowd.

The no-nonsense crowd ranted more nugu votes toward the original five contestants than support.

After Dennis displayed the variety of partying gifts such as a fully connected Mango cellular telephone, an armful of SIM cards, and of course those loud orange Mango tees, everybody’s homie and cousin pretty much dashed to the stage to take part in the festivities.

Most of these greedy goblins, or should I say ghouly hotgirls, just had their faces painted and did not go to the extreme to create horrific costumes for the occasion.

For instance, my man with the skeleton mask with the wild hair protruding from it, with the torn, raggedy clothes, (who won the Mango phone) or the blonde dude with the plastic sword going through his body with marks of “blood” on his white shirt.

Before the contest, the Obsession dance troupe did a rather interesting and comical interpretation of the Wacko Jacko Thriller classic, very appropriate for the occasion.

They had it all: The innocent girl happy to walk down the enchanted streets with her handsome beau. Then, all of a sudden, this ghastly creature approaches them and breaks their romantic mood.

Soon, the girl and her beau are lured under the creature’s spell and they began to perform a beastly dance routine alongside more crazy-looking creatures that are a mixture of felines from the Broadway play Cats and the show-turned-movie Tales from the Crypt.

Then, the dancers changed and the Obsessions female dancers shook anything that could wiggle and jiggle on their bodies, to the music. Their hips thumping and gyrating to the bass beats, enticed many males in the audience to move from their dates and other company to stare at these sexy vixens.

The men of Obsession pranced and danced as they crooned their hits like Nod Your Head, and Housegirl, while some rather tipsy clubsters decided to join them as they rocked the crowd.

Some notables at the club were Mr. and Mrs Wavammuno, hip-hop musician Chaga and his partner Weasel, and of course, Jose Chameleone. Chameleone was actually playing Mr. Incognito for most of the night, his face covered by a mask.

All in all, the hyped crowd seemed ready after 11:30 p.m. to head toward Club Silk to really get their groove on till the break of dawn. But other city slickers took the back roads and headed to the laid-back Steak Out, an outdoor steakhouse down the street from the courthouse, to grab a bite while socialising over old-school 80s tunes from New Edition and Tone Loc.

Halloween had many hot scenes for all partygoers who probably can’t wait to do it again this weekend—-without the costumes, of course.
