THE Health Service Commission has asked health minister Jim Muhwezi to help it retain its autonomy, reports John Eremu.

The commission chairperson, Samwiri Kamya, said merging it with another institution as the Cabinet proposed to the Constitutional Review Commission would breed inefficiency.

“We believe the proposal will take us exactly where we came from and will assist to institutionalise inefficiency, which we had already done away with,” Kamya said.

This was at the opening of the commission’s strategic planning workshop in Entebbe on Tuesday.

Muhwezi asked them to work diligently in order to justify their existence.

He said the proposed merger was meant to cut the cost of public administration.

Kamya was supported by his deputy Catherine Kabugo and commissioners George Kirya, Jovan Kiryabwire, Florence Mwebeza and Charles Twinomugisha.

The commission secretary, Christine Guwatudde, said there was a shortage of trained health workers.
