TOPIC: Geological time scale and ages of rocks. A’ level P250/1
In The New Vision of Saturday November 22, 2003, Ayeta Wangusa writes about her travel in the mountains of Cambria of Wales in UK. Her story has a significance to our knowledge in Geography especially at A’ level when we begin studying the geological time scale. Un familiar terms in the time scale tease our minds.
Equip yourself with an Atlas and locate the Cambrian mountains of the UK.
Describe the features of autumn season that Ayeta experienced.
Name other seasons in UK.
How and why do you think our seasons differ with those of UK?
Ayeta went up the mountains in Cambria. Terms like Cambrian and pre- Cambrian are encountered when classifying rocks in our physical geography. Is there any relationship between the area visited and physical geography?
Yes. It s important to note that, geologists classify rocks according to their age. The age of the rocks can be told only by the fossil remains they contain and fossils become readily apparent only in what is known as the Cambrian period.
Since such rocks were first studied in Cambria so the term Cambrian Period was coined and now used as reference in geological time scale as we meet it in our studies.
Using a geological time scale state the time in millions of years ago, for Cambrian period.
What do the terms era, period, system and series mean with respect to a geological time scale?
3 She describes the area: “Even past the stout walls made from boulders of slate, a common symbol of Cambrian’s fields.â€
Photograph interpretation A’ Level: Study the photo accompanying Ayeta’s travel experience in Wales and do the following.
Describe the scenery in the middle and background of the photo.
Draw a landscape sketch and annotate it with wave erosion and deposition features, wave features, headlands, rocksplits, bedding- planes and a living person.
Identify the type of rock in the fore ground.
Describe the physical characteristics of the rock type shown.
Account for the landforms that you have labelled in the photo sketch above.
Using evidence from the photo and your knowledge explain the economic significance of the features appearing in the photo of the area.
Where can such photographs be taken from in East Africa? Why?
