A friend’s daughter recently expressed disappointment at my failure to send her a success card before she sits for her Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) this week.

“It seems you do not love or care about me. You have not sent me a success card yet I am having my exams soon,” Winnie complained.

Her open request gave me a greater revelation of the mystery, which lies behind a success card. To many candidates like Winnie success card conveys more than mere statements of best wishes. It is a yardstick used to judge who cares and to what extent. To many parents however, success card is an unnecessary luxury which candidates can do without. After all those sweet wishes can be appropriately conveyed verbally.

Examination is a battle- like experience, which poses a psychological threat to the candidates. The child’s brain is subjected to an intense pressure and stress, which makes him/her emotionally vulnerable.

An emotionally vulnerable person naturally craves for social support and acceptance more than anything else. Have you ever found yourself standing on sinking ground at any point in life?

Several schools have realised the significance of offering social support to their candidates during examination period.

Most schools have made it a policy to hold dedication prayers for their candidates shortly before exams.

These dedication prayers recognise children as social beings that need a social support system to boost their ego before they face a battle.

Prayers help the candidates to come to grips with the situation without yielding to negative emotions. A success card from a parent to a child conveys more than best wishes to the child.

  • In a success card, your child sees and feels love, care and acceptance from some body on whose hand his/her life depends. This is healthy nourishment to the child’s mind.

  • A card not only communicates wishes but it also carries deep feelings with it. Nothing elevates your child’s self esteem like knowing that some body cares for him/her deeply at such a time.

  • A success card helps you to communicate a social support message: “I am with you in that battle. Do not lose heart, fight bravely for I shall always pray for you.” What a strengthening message this is!

  • Children who do not receive success cards often feel rejected, isolated and let down by people who are close to them. these negative feelings wound self-esteem and make the child face the exam with a sense of inadequacy and low self worth.

Remember to take time and choose a success card with an appropriate message to build and encourage your child constructively.

Children treasure success cards and keep referring to them even after exams. Go ahead now and send a card to that candidate. Best of luck!
