Tilda Uganda wins investor of the year

THEY clapped, danced and ululated as Aguna Julius, a fitter mechanist with Tilda Uganda Ltd displayed a gold award for the overall investor of the year 2003.

The Tilda ‘rice’ project which was licensed on February 20, 1997, is located in Eastern Uganda and has to date made significant progress in agriculture and agro-processing.
The company has invested US$ 174m in agricultural machinery, land development and a modern laboratory for research. Tilda has created employment for over 1,000 Ugandans and trained staff for universities.

“For these and other several achievements, Tilda Uganda owned by Tilda Holdings Africa Limited has been recorganised as the overall investor of the year and is awarded the gold award for the year 2003,” Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) executive director Dr. Maggie Kigozi announced on Friday at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The silver award went to Hima Cement Ltd for responding to the Government’s call for increased foreign investment in the manufacturing sector.

Nile Bank Ltd won the investor of the year bronze award for supporting micro finance projects by providing wholesale finance for onward lending.

The company created employment for 223 Ugandans, invested US$ 813,355 and realised a turnover of US$ 6,707,932.

Golf Course Holdings Ltd and Tororo Cement Industries Ltd were each awarded a certificate of merit as the best investor of the year in the large scale category.

The medium scale category certificates of merit went to Royal Suites Limited and Britannia Allied Industries Ltd for provision of quality apartments and food products respectively.

Reco Industries and Crane Crafts received certficates of merit.
