MK publishers, one of the biggest educational books publishers in the country has won a global award in recognition of their efforts in the fight against illiteracy.
The award, which is from the US-Based Business Initiative Directions, is a tribute to the firm’s support for the global literacy movement.
David Majwega, the firm’s executive director, who travelled to the US to pick the award, said that it is acknowledgement of their leadership, technology and innovation in the education field.
“They made selections according to the quality of our products, service offered, rate at which the organisation is growing, customer satisfaction and the rate of employee turn over,†he told journalists at their office in Kibuye, recently.
Majwega said that as part of their long-term plan for the market, they do not choose books because of the envisaged monetary returns, but the social and educational benefits that may arise out of the availability of such publications.
About 52 companies from 166 countries competed for the prizes in several categories.
Joset Priesto, the president, Business Initiative Directions, handed over the prize to Majwega.
The Kibuye-based firm, which started in 1995, has so far published 300 titles. On average, MK publishes between 30 to 50 titles a year.
The firm won a four-year tender from the Kenya ministry of education to provide several books for secondary education.
Majwega said they are ready to compete for tenders for post primary educational books, in the planned free secondary school education project.
