SITTING tenants of the Naguru and Nakawa housing estates shall be given the first priority to acquire the plots for redevelopment, the Nakawa division chairman, Protazio Kintu, has said.

Speaking during a press briefing at Naguru Community Centre recently, Kintu appealed to leaders against politicising the development scheme to enable Kampala City Council (KCC) modernise the city.

“Nakawa division is working hand in hand with KCC to give tenants a chance to develop the area. We want it to succeed,” Kintu said.

He said KCC would come up with a fee at which the interested developers would purchase the space.

“I do not know whether the plots would be acquired at a market value or fixed price,” he added.

Kintu said so far 10 tenants had received their resettlement packages that is equivalent to one year’s rent paid by a tenant.

He said tenants in rental arrears would not benefit from the package.

He said tenants are free to carry all the building materials from the houses they have been occupying.

Kintu said a tenant who was paying sh10,000, and is now in rental arrears of three months, sh30,000 would be deducted from his or her resettlement package.

Tenants of the two dilapidated estates pay rent of between sh10,000-30,000 per month.
KCC recently issued new eviction notices to tenants to vacate both estates within 90 days for Nakawa and 180 days for Naguru. Both estates lie on 163 acres.

The estates would be redeveloped into a satellite area with modern residential and commercial buildings.
