Here come the Kora All Africa Music Awards

Organisers of this year’s Kora All Africa Music Awards have confirmed that American rap sensation, Ludacris and jazz diva Angie Stone will grace this year’s ceremony.

An E-mail from Kora publicists, reveals that everything is in high gear for this year’s ceremony which will also be graced by Cape Verde songbird Suzaana.
The 2003 awards takes place on December 6, at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Sandton, Johannesburg and will pay tribute to a number of prominent African musicians.
Ugandan artists, Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool and Pastor George Okudi are some of the nominees for the awards. Other nominees in the various categories include Yvonne Chaka-Chaka, Ringo, Gloria Bosman, P-Square, Notre-Dame de la Salette, Rufftone, Jane Osborne, Penny Penny, Joe Shirimani, and the Congolese group G7.
“Kora was established to recognise the growing African musical talent to promote up-and-coming artists, and to unite the African diaspora through music and art,†wrote Ernest Coovi Adjovi, the Kora chairman and executive producer in an E-mail to The New Vision.
Adjovi says this year’s nominees are a testament to the rich cultural heritage and the exciting talent that Africa has.
“We are excited to have such international performers as Angie Stone, Ludacris and Koffi Olomide share in the celebration of music of the African diaspora,†he adds.
The event promises to be spectacular with some of South Africa’s top production and design companies lending their talents to the production.
Michael Gill Designs, who design the stages for such events as Miss South Africa and Miss World, now turn their talents to the Kora awards, while ThreeWay TV has been commissioned to produce the event.
The event will be open to the public. Tables for the banquet expected to seat 1,500 people are still available for booking through the Kora office by calling (011) 884 8420.
The Kora awards were founded in 1994 and first broadcast to 45 countries in Africa in 1996. They are the only non-sporting African event to be broadcast live in Africa, Europe and Asia. The television audience is estimated at approximately 620 million.
Previous recipients of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award and the African Legendary Award include Nelson Mandela, Koffi Annan, and Miriam Makeba.
