LEADING equipment financiers, dfcu Leasing and the Shell Foundation, through the Uganda Energy Fund will give more funding to help Uganda’s honey break into the European market reports Steven Odeu.

Collin McCormack, DFCU managing director and Chris West, the deputy director of the Shell Foundation yesterday visited Chemiphar Laboratory in Kansanga to work out details.

“We are trying to establish a future for Uganda’s honey. We have to put in enormous amount of money and effort to see that we meet the required quality,” McCormack said.

He said having a recognised standard will act as a bargaining chip for the sector, which has the potential to support thousands in the rural areas.

“This process is expected to produce all the necessary quality parameters that are internationally defined and accepted. This will boost the national and export markets for honey,” McCormack said.

West said the London-based Shell Foundation will contribute more money towards the UEF project.
