The European Union (EU) has extended a grant of Euro 50.6m (about sh120b) to build the Jinja-Bugiri road

The European Union (EU) has extended a grant of Euro 50.6m (about sh120b) to build the Jinja-Bugiri road, reports Josephine Maseruka.

EU First Counsellor Guy Rijcken said about 3m Euros of the total grant had been used to refurbish the Maraba boarder post. It is awaiting inauguration.

Rijcken told The New Vision recently that the remaining Euro 47.6m would be used on road construction from the Owen Falls Dam to Bugiri town.

“There will be very strong renforcement of the road with two-meter shoulders on either side and a 7.2 metre ash-fold (concrete),” he said, adding that construction works on Rukingiri-Kagamba road would start soon.

The EU recently allocated sh26b (Euro 11m) for construction of feeder roads in seven districts under the District Roads Re-gravelling Project.

The districts are Busia, Bugiri, Jinja, Wakiso, Mpigi and Masaka. Rijcken said they were considering proposals for new road projects including the 92m Euro (about sh213b) grant for the rehabilitation of priority sections between Kampala and Mbarara.
