A rain storm ripped through Kampala city on Monday night causing a major blackout and destroying a lot of property.

Multiple faults were caused on the distribution system, leading to the power-cut in most parts of Kampala and its neighbourhood, Edward Twine, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) spokesman, said.

“The nature of power distribution network in Uganda is so old. It succumbs easily,” he said.

Robert Kisubi, the UEDCL manager, corporate communication said, “We have had one hell of a day. Our technical staff have been working tirelessly to refix the system.” Nakawa Total filling station lost a roof. Employees seemed shocked by the ferocity of the rain.

In the city centre, it was billboards that faced the wrath of the storm. It was the same story at Jinja Road where another Caltex billboard was badly damaged. Trees close to the road were not spared as branches were strewn all over.
