AT least 10 Sabiny specialist women in female genital mutilation (FGM) on Sunday quit the practice due to its harm on the victims.

The traditional surgeons stopped the practice at Kapchorwa Boma Grounds during the 8th annual district culture day celebrations presided over by the deputy speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga.

The surgeons, who came from different parts of the district, said most victims had died during surgery while some others had remained infertile in their marital lives.

They told Kadaga that the practice was a prime source of income for the past 40 years.

“Now that we have abandoned this practice which has been our source of living, we are appealing to the Government to provide us with alternative sources of income,” Koko Beti, the team leader from Kwanyiy sub-county, said.

The UN reproductive, educative and community health project team sensitised the team on the effects of the practice.

Beti said the project had started facilitating expectant women on safe motherhood.

Kadaga said the practice was violating women and children's rights.

At least 500-1000 Sabiny girls and women in the district are mutilated during the annual initiation ceremonies.
