FORMER Kampala mayor Nasser Sebaggala currently on studies in the UK has said he would contest for mayorship first and then go for presidency in 2006.

Sebaggala said this on Monday in a live Luganda talkshow on CBS FM “Kiriza oba gaana” conducted by Meddie Nsereko.

“Since we shall have LC elections first, I will first contest for mayorship, capture the seat and then go for the presidential race after some few months. My target is to exploit all the available chances,” Sebaggala, who called in from the UK, said.

He said after becoming a president, he would decide with Democratic Party members on the best candidate for mayor.

“In DP, we have our own arrangement. We set our strategies, we shall sit and decide on who to occupy the mayoral seat since I would be in a higher office. But the issue is I will first secure it from other waiting political forces,” he said.

Callers expressed their disappointment to the UK student, saying they wanted him to stand for presidency and not for a lower position.

“No, no, my supporters should not fear this, politics is dynamic. I don’t see why I will just look on when the elections for LCs come. I must keep busy by contesting and then wait to see how the trends in presidential elections would go.

Contesting for mayorship doesn’t disqualify me from going for the higher office,” Sebaggala said.
