Are you nail wise?

You had a long week, working a stressful 9-5 job and just want to relax and be pampered. So you dash off to your favourite salon, making an effort to take a pair of sandals, so that your toenails can be manicured and dry with ease.

When you get there, you sink into a chair, ready for a manicure and pedicure and daydream about walking out of the salon looking snazzy, with your finger and toes nail done–feeling refreshed and lovely.

But according to international news reports, some women recently left salons in California more stressed than when they arrived, thanks to a bacterium called fortuitum that attacked their toe nails.

Some of these salons had unclean footbath filtering systems. Little nasties from the filters crept into the toxic brew of skin, hair and nail clippings and washed over clients’ feet, resulting in many women contracting skin infections.

Debbie Kazinda, the manager of My Nail Salon, on Jinja Road, says:

“The first thing we do in the morning is to sterilise everything we use, as cleanliness is vital.”

The following tips may also help.

  • Inquire first: Ask around before heading out to the salon, regardless of whether or not the establishment is considered to be upscale or carry reasonable prices for its services. Get information from friends and even your beautician on salons to go to for your nails

  • Ask, ask, ask: Do not be afraid to ask the nail technicians about their products or services. Just like your hair, your nails should be done in a clean, safe place.

  • Play detective: Drop in to see how the manicurists conduct themselves and their quality of work. Observant whether they us sterilising liquids to clean their tools. You may even ask how often.

If you can make sure that every curl is in place on your head and that your fingernail colour matches your toenails, then you should make an effort to insure that your health is not at risk when visiting beauty salons for services. It may sound a little melodramatic, but these tips could save your health and your money.
