There might be no vanilla in Mukono district by the harvesting season, officials have disclosed.

“The buyers can not wait for the right time because they are wary of stiff competition.

The beans are good but would be best if harvested between December and January,” said an official who preferred anonymity.

Eight suspected vanilla thieves have been lynched, two had their ears cut off and another one lost his hand to the irate farmers.

The official said, “Though the trade minister, Edward Rugumayo issued a directive restricting vanilla trade, farmers are selling their green oil through back doors.”
