UNIDENTIFIED hooligans pounced on Makindye East MP Michael Mabike (right) and scores of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) and beat them thoroughly at Kabale Victoria Inn yesterday, reports Hannington Mbabazi and Milton Olupot.

Mabike, also the UYD secretary general, had led a team to conduct a workshop in Kabale.

He was attacked by over 15 club-wielding assailants as he addressed over 70 youthful participants at the inn. Several people were injured and rushed to various clinics in Kabale.

Kabale DPC Martin Amoru identified some of the injured as Didas Mwebase, Bushenyi district UYD chairman and Vincent Byamukama a student of National Teachers College, Kabale.

Mabikke with five other UYD leaders and three visiting Norwegians, from the Norwegian Labour Youth recorded statements at Kabale Police station before being ordered to leave the district.

The Norwegians were identified as Gro-Mettee, Astrid Hutfield and Tom Eric. Others were UYD president Lynda Komakech, secretary for social welfare Godfrey Ntale, publicity secretary Donald Kateregga and William Kamulegeya. UYD vice president Kenneth Kakande yesterday alleged that the attackers were mobilised by the Kabale RDC, Lt. James Mwesige.
