A recent Iganga district council session turned rowdy when the district chairman, Asuman Kyafu, failed to apologise for lying to his council, reports George Bita.

Kyafu, who instead delivered a speech, said, “I studied the circumstances and saw no reason to apologise.”

Yona Ibanda, a councillor, said, “The chairman’s actions after several attempts to have him apologise portray his adamant behaviour. So he should move out.”

The councillors unanimously seconded Ibanda’s motion but Kyafu refused to apologise or get out.

Godfrey Mukasa, the district speaker, made several unsuccessful attempts to call the session to order before adjourning the meeting prematurely.

The incident followed the council’s query over a recent advertisement of the post of a water officer by the executive without informing the works committee.

In an earlier meeting, the council accused the chief administrative officer, Nelson Kirenda and Kyafu for the irregularity.

Works committee chairman Bashir Balidawa said the advertisement contravened the Local Governments Act.
