Uganda Is Only Formally Religious!

Sir—In his recent comments on morals and safety, the President indicated that 86% of Ugandans are ‘Christian’. He pointed out that the values of our society don’t reflect this proportion.

Sir—In his recent comments on morals and safety, the President indicated that 86% of Ugandans are ‘Christian’. He pointed out that the values of our society don’t reflect this proportion. Apart from him, Ian Legget noted a similar problem in a book, Uganda: the Background, the Issues, the People, published in 2001 by Oxfam ISBN 0 8559 84546.
Legget’s book displays ‘Christianity’ in Uganda as a mere formality that lacks substance which made the Jewish Christians of the first century AD highly effective at transforming nations.
From this background, there are many excellent ideas about how to socially and economically develop Uganda as a country. Here are some: privatise all companies because then people will become more responsible at their places of work; develop a reading culture; be responsible for your family and take your children for immunisation; don’t alter the Constitution for short-term gain at the expense of the future stability of the nation; Joseph Kony should stop killing people; teach life skills and values in primary schools, etc.
