The Broadcasting Council yesterday shut down Beat FM (96.3FM) for operating without a licence, reports Solomon Muyita.

The station is co-owned by US-based Ugandan singer, Halima Namakula of the Ekimbeewo fame, her son Hamdee Kiwanuka and Rajesh Limbachia, who is also the proprietor of AL’s Bar in Kansanga.

The council said the Mawanda Road-based station did not have an operation license and had not paid its workers since it went on air mid this year.

Godfrey Mutabazi, the Broadcasting Council chief, said Beat FM owed the council sh3.5m. He said they had discussed the closure with information minister Nsaba Buturo.

Officials from the council, led by Dennis Lukaaya, the operations officer and Moses Tibamanya, the finance and administration officer, delivered the suspension letter yesterday at mid-day.
